Lessons from Hancock…

I am going to run out with some brand new ideas – not entirely, some have been in my head and on sheets of papers stuck to my task board (in lagos and Minna) for quite a while. But the movie hancock which I saw for a second time yesterday, helped put a few things in perspective.
In that movie Will Smith – one of the few hollywood actors whose name I know and whose picture I can identify-interpreted the role of Micheal Hancoock – hope that is correct –or just hancock. Will did good, but in such a way that caused his beneficiaries a lot of pain. He didn’t see the reason for their hassles and on one occassion after preveting a PR consultantfrom being crushed by a fast approaching train but not with some collateral damage, Will turned a music conductor, making jest of the din around the insesibility of the damages effected by his rescue mission.
What does this call to mind:
Presentation
(1) means, how do I present my offerings? Is it such that while aiming to satify my client base and grow it, it does not affect adversely those wh are to benefit. Given that human capacity development forms a core of my interest and I have developed some competence in this regard especially in the area of helping undergrads be their best while at school and after (www.thestudentsurvivalkit.com), I have to rethink my model of going wholly online with future works and consider doing print alongside all future works.
It is a truth that internet access though increasingly available to more Nigerians daily, it still remains a sort of luxury (at best ) or sometimes mystery (at worst) to many. Many may be forced to view products sold/marketed/presented whollyon it the same way they view the means, I may not reach my goals.
(2) Method besides means (where means have been identified above as channels open for presentations); is the actual presentation. With the print version of Student Survival Kit, all ideas are assumed allien to the typical freshman and thus they were presented (a) in plain english as much as possible and (b) in bite size chunk – this means ideas are broken into their most basic nature and as much space and time as found neccessary are expended to make the presntation worth it.
I even added a thirteenth chapter which captures the entire thrust of the book in one breadth.
(3) PR – All good ideas must look good, a lot of people still judge books by their covers so why not put a good book within very attractive covers?
Ok, I am sure you will wonder if all of the came from he movie Hancock by Will Smith? Well no, it came from me seeing he movie lying on my back sipping a cold drink from my fav mug and thinking about the future – my future our future!

Takin and Passing Exams

When you take a test, you are demonstrating your ability to understand course material or perform certain tasks. Successful test taking avoids carelessness.
Examples of objective tests are true-false, multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank.
Examples of subjective texts are short answer, essay, or oral exams
These suggestions may help you avoid careless errors!
Prepare:
· Analyze your past test results
Each test can further prepare you for the next test. Use your tests to review when studying for final exams
· Arrive early for tests
Bring all the materials you will need such as pencils and pens, a calculator, a dictionary, and a watch. This helps you focus on the task at hand
· Be comfortable but alert
Choose a good spot and make sure you have enough room to work, maintain comfortable posture but don’t “slouch”
· Stay relaxed and confident
Remind yourself that you are well-prepared and are going to do well. If you find yourself anxious, take several slow, deep breaths to relax
Don’t talk about the test to other students just before it; anxiety is contagious
Taking the Test:
· Read the directions carefully
This may be obvious, but it will help you avoid careless errors
If there is time, quickly look through the test for an overview
Note key terms, jot down brief notes
· Answer questions in a strategic order:
1. First easy questions
to build confidence, score points, and mentally orient yourself to vocabulary, concepts, and your studies (it may help you make associations with more difficult questions)
2. Then difficult questions or those with the most point value
With objective tests, first eliminate those answers you know to be wrong, or are likely to be wrong, don’t seem to fit, or where two options are so similar as to be both incorrect
With essay/subjective questions, broadly outline your answer and sequence the order of your points
· Review:
Resist the urge to leave as soon as you have completed all the items
Review your test to make sure that you have answered all questions, not mis-marked the answer sheet, or made some other simple mistake
Proofread your writing for spelling, grammar, punctuation, decimal points, etc.
Change answers to questions if you originally misread them
or if you have encountered information elsewhere in the test that indicates that your first choice is incorrect
IMPORTANT
The University releases examination guidelines just before commencement of examinations every semester and disobeying any of these rules could attract severe punishments- you may even loose you studentship

The Iceberg Theory (I)

Hi,

I will share with you what one of my mentors shared with me in the course of the year.He often employs the powers of pictures to illustrates theories, that will have been too abstract  to be easily comprehended.

Icebergs are monstrous rocks of solid water-ice- often found in deep sea. They are known to suddenly appear in the view of sailors often times so suddenly that avoiding it becomes excruciating and sometimes impossible.

The famous ship TITANIC was torn apart by icebergs in deep sea.

The amazing thing about icebergs is that what ever part of it visible above the seas is only a tip of it, what lies below the waters and out of sight is more monstrous and that is what makes it more hazardous to ships-tearing them apart.

The theory is thus:

To achieve success in Life you need more than can be seen

My mentor believes strongly that all skills in ones possession is but about 15% of the necessity for success in any particular endeavor, and the rest ingredients are the silent, unconscious, usually indiscernible part of us, residing in the deep recess of our personalities which oftentimes we are not aware of.

The first book of peter states clearly that

                …do not let your adornment be merely outward –arranging the hair, wearing gold, or putting on fine apparel- rather let it be the hidden person of the heart …

Thus reechoing the arguments of the two sources I have cited, I posit as follows:

Build your inner person:  first you need to look deeper into yourself and identify the real you. Not the made up –perfumed, “lipsticked” and dressed up you- but the real you, the motives behind your actions, your premonitions, fears, aspirations, private thoughts…. It is this part of you that is most important to your productivity.

Spend time building it, meditate-think deeply- with a view to improve whatever     flaw(s) you identify and reinforce whatever strength(s) you find. To achieve this however you need to develop yard sticks to measure and determine what constitutes flaws and what are strengths

2.       Your inner person will grow either you grow it or not and the factors that grow you are often incidental and are often such that you have no control over, like your background, your experiences, your exposures and such other little things considered as unimportant.

                    “Weeds grow either planted or not.”

But we are all aware of the ugliness of weeds and how hurriedly and carefully they are removed from gardens to prevent them corrupting the carefully “horticultured” garden. The same care and abruptness should be applied to carefully building our unconscious person. 

3       Your inner Person determines the extent you get  to in life –and not the skills as earlier stated.

Have you bothered to ask why you are subjected to several excruciating interviews even after obtaining good degrees from recognized Universities, meeting the job requirements in terms of requisite experience and also passing the aptitude tests. It is simple, the potential employer wants to see as much of your hidden person as is possible before committing into your hands huge resources. They want to identify what talents you have and you are likely unaware of, that can be of use to the establishment- so know what he is looking for when he asks you to tell him what you will do if confronted by so and so situation.

The extent you get in life ties to your creative prowess which in turn ties in directly to the health of your inner person.

4.       Live your life like you are in private at all times, for go the pretences often associated with every day living, this way you overcome limitations imposed by convention and reach your full potential.
